I was already having a hard time figuring out exactly what to say about this book without sounding like a culturally-intolerant privileged white person, but then I learned that the entire book is actually a fabrication, and that Khouri’s own story is a weird, convoluted tangle of stuff a quick google search will give you the basicsand now I just don’t even know where to begin.
I gave this book a pass while reading it because it was based on a true story and I kept telling myself that the characters are bland because it’s too difficult for the author to re-live that period of time in her life.
I really have no idea what her thought process here was. After an month investigation, the Sydney Morning Herald claimed that Khouri has a Greek-American husband, two adolescent children, and a family in Chicago who have heard little about her knouri years.
